Do you think its popularity comes from the gameplay itself, social media exposure, word of mouth, or simply good timing?

I’d say social media probably played a big part. Games with simple mechanics are easy to show in short videos, and people understand what’s happening without needing a long explanation. That makes them much easier to share and talk about.

For me, the low learning curve is probably the main reason. You can basically jump in and understand the idea within a few minutes. There are plenty of more complex games out there, but sometimes people just want something straightforward for a short session.
