How much should a Range Rover gearbox rebuild actually cost, feel like I'm being quoted random numbers (12 อ่าน)

Trying to get a reality check from people who've actually been through this because right now I feel like every place I call just makes up a number on the spot. My Range Rover Vogue started slipping noticeably about two weeks ago, you put your foot down and there's this delay before the power actually kicks in, almost like the engine revs up before the transmission catches up with it, and it's gotten progressively worse to the point where I'm honestly scared to take it on the highway anymore in case it does something unpredictable mid drive. I called around to four different places, two independent garages and two that claim to specialize in Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles specifically, and the quotes I got ranged from what I'd consider reasonable all the way up to a number that made me think they either assumed I wouldn't question it or genuinely have no idea what they're doing and are padding the price to cover their own uncertainty. One place didn't even want to run a proper diagnostic first, they just heard slipping and immediately jumped to quoting a full rebuild without confirming what was actually going on internally, which felt like a huge red flag to me since slipping can apparently mean a dozen different things depending on what's actually failing. A friend who works in fleet management for a logistics company recommended I specifically look for a trusted Range Rover transmission repair in Sharjah rather than just a general mechanic, since he said Land Rover gearboxes especially the older ZF units have very specific failure patterns that someone unfamiliar with the brand might misdiagnose entirely, and paying for the wrong fix is honestly worse than paying more upfront for the correct one. So now I'm trying to figure out what a fair diagnostic fee even looks like before committing to anyone, and whether it's normal for legitimate specialists to want to actually road test and scan the car properly before throwing out a repair estimate, or if that's just wishful thinking on my part. If anyone here has gone through an actual rebuild recently and remembers roughly what they paid, even a ballpark range would genuinely help me figure out who's quoting fairly and who's just guessing, because right now I feel completely lost in this process and don't want to get taken advantage of.
